Cardboard scraplights by Graypants

June 26, 2012

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about lighting. There are so many designers out there creating products that employ reused materials in creative ways, like the Seattle and Amsterdam-based studio Graypants. The designers, Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker have developed a series of lights made entirely from recycled cardboard boxes, check out their story:

Their scraplights are pretty awesome, and, they look great with plumen bulbs (which use 80% less energy than incandescents).

The team behind Graypants have also put their creative minds to use in other areas of design and have developed several really cool projects. Balena is a project designed to raise awareness of the gigantic garbage patches swirling in our oceans (a collaborative effort between Graypants, Rollerhaus and Studio Gypsies). Brightly colored GLOBALLS attract particles with charged copper ionization, turning waste into a kind of performance art. Check out the project here.

I’m looking forward to seeing what other kind of projects and products emerge from the studio.
