To buy or not to buy?

November 26, 2011

Well here it is, the day after Black Friday, and two days after Thanksgiving. We’re now in full swing holiday shopping mode. So, did you join the masses yesterday and fight the crowds for the doorbusters and deals? Or perhaps you’re waiting until today when it might be slightly less chaotic (and some stores may still have those deals). Or you’ve decided to stay home and avoid shopping all together. Either way, there’s a lot of chatter about our consumption patterns around this time of year. American Express is sponsoring a “small business saturday” today to try to get our dollars to be spent in our communities. Some support a “buy nothing” day (think occupy xmas).

Andrew Revkin proposed something different. He suggests a “make something day” and I quite like the idea.

I’m hoping to make a coffee table out of a slab of live edge wood and some hairpin legs, so yesterday I started the hunt for a suitable piece of wood in a salvage store and at a sawmill down the street. Much more fun than waiting in line for Best Buy to open at 12:01am, or 3am or whenever it was. What about you? Do you have any projects that you’ve been wanting to do? By the way, if you happen to know of some wood that would make an excellent table top, please be in touch! I hope to make something similar to this:
