A Liter of Light (Isang Litrong Liwanag)
Many families in the Philippines (and around the world) live in very dark, small homes that are often close together. Some try to obtain electricity illegally and set up systems that are prone to fire, which can then spread rapidly through the shanties.
Several MIT students have invented a solar bottle “bulb” in response to the need for light in these communities. Isang Litrong Liwanag (A Liter of Light), part of the MyShelter Foundation, is a project to organize the installation of clear plastic bottles into rooftops to generate daylight. The bottles are filled with a solution of water and a little bit of bleach and salt, then inserted into the metal of the roof to allow the light to refract into the home.
