Have you heard the term ciclovia? In Bogotá, Colombia it is a car-free event during which city streets are closed to traffic and residents come out to bike, walk, socialize, skate, dance or just hang out. As one of the interviewees in the following video says, “the most important thing of the Ciclovia is social integration,” bringing together people of various ages, sexes, economic levels, etc.
I love this idea of “shared living”, living in the city can be lonely and these kind of free, public events allow residents to get some exercise as well as get closer to each other and to their community. Check out this video shot by Clarence Eckerson:
The idea of the ciclovia has been adopted by cities worldwide — for Boston’s version, they close down Memorial Drive by the Charles River in Cambridge every sunday for pedestrians, bikers and whoever wants to join. Does your city do something similar?
