Forget Black Friday, shop tomorrow for Small Business Saturday

November 26, 2010

It’s now officially retail Christmas season. We’ve stuffed ourselves with Turkey and now have been told by all the big retailers that it’s time to start shopping. Deals this way, deals that way, deals starting at 3am… you name it. As tempting as it can be to indulge in Black Friday and catch some of those early deals, it doesn’t really benefit our local economies. We can do much better with our money, and one of those ways is to participate in the first Small Business Saturday this November 27th.

The website for Small Business Saturday states that “for every $100 spent at local small businesses, $68 returns to the community.” If we direct our money away from the Wal-Marts and Targets and towards smaller, community-focused businesses, we can support jobs and build stronger communities. This may ultimately make our national economy stronger and use patterns of consumption for the greater good.
