More car sharing options
You’ve probably heard of Zipcar, the car sharing program in many urban and collegiate environments where you can rent a car by the hour or day. It’s a great idea that’s been highly successful, but now there are a host of other car sharing programs beginning to sprout up. One of them is called RelayRides.
The idea is that if you own a car, you can rent it out. If you need a car, you find someone near you that is willing to share their car, and you pay them an hourly (or daily) rate, much like Zipcar. It offers car owners a way to make some money back from the cost of owning a car, and the owner chooses how much and when they want to rent it out. Gas and insurance are included in the hourly rate, and RelayRides provides a $1 million policy on top of the car owners’.
It’s kind a cool idea, owning a car can be really expensive and if others can use it while you’re not, then you’re improving the efficiency of our transportation system. Of course, I’d always wonder whether the car would be clean, whether there’d be pet hair all over it, if the owner smokes, whether they’ve have maintenance done recently, and many other questions. But, who knows, maybe somebody would be willing to share their Porsche Carrera and I might sign up just for a summer spin in that.
Enjoy your weekend!
