Snow Leopard – Endangered Cat or Software Update?
As Apple releases its latest operating system update, Snow Leopard, we ought to pause and consider their name choice. Snow Leopard is the newest in a line of endangered animals from the “Leopard” to “Tiger.” As consumers, do we have a role to push companies like Apple to publicize the fragile condition of these magnificent cats and to protect them?
Apple uses iconic animals such as the tiger to indicate faster, stronger, better service. But what will they be able to say if these animals do in fact, go extinct? Some organizations have used Apple’s marketing campaign to raise awareness. The Apple Specialist Marketing Co-op is one of those. They partnered with the Snow Leopard Trust to raise funds by allowing customers to ‘adopt’ a snow leopard cub or to donate directly. Other independent Apple Specialist Resellers are participating as well, as a list can be found here.
So when you buy a new mac, or think about other products that use endangered animals in their product promotions, do you also think about the animal? Does it raise awareness or is it some kind of exploitation? We need snow leopards and tigers to grace the planet, not just box covers.
